The Apple Barn

Constructed in 1910, the Apple Barn was part of a farm owned by the Hicks and Kilpatrick families since 1972. In 1976, they planted their initial trees, and the orchard now consists of over 4,000 trees. Finally, after careful and diligent work, the old cattle barn was renovated in 1980 and remains as pristine as ever.

We preserved the existing structure of the old barn and merely applied a sealer to the black walnut and wormy chestnut wood. Additionally, we maintained the stables and feeding rack. Then in 1981, it began its new journey as a location to buy locally grown apples and cider. Now, it operates all year round.

Today families from all around take their kids and grandkids to the riverbank at the farm. A place once frequented by the Kilpatrick boys to play baseball and ride bikes. The Cider Bar soon followed to offer visitors a place to sit back and have something to eat or a cider to sip. As demand for their neighbor’s fried pies grew, they decided to construct a kitchen. In doing so they added more freshly-baked goods to their menu.

Today, visitors can still taste the same flavors, see many of the same employees, and delight in the same fields and orchard views that they did fifty years ago. The General Store continued to expand, bringing new local foods for everyone to enjoy, including the now-famous apple butter.
