Description

The Georgetown County Museum provides intriguing links between rivers, marshes, rice, muskets, revolution, and numerous other areas of life. Georgetown is South Carolina’s third oldest city, founded in 1729.

This thoroughly fascinating collection of artifacts presents a complex picture of all facets of coastal South Carolina life. Because of this, the Georgetown County Historical Society launched the museum as a side project in 1955. They decided that a location was required to share these artifacts and representations of nearly 300 years of history with the broader public after years of collecting county treasures. Commemorating almost all facets of Lowcountry South Carolina history while giving fresh life to an already vivid path.

The museum not only houses an abundance of regional treasures. But it is also frequently the starting point for intricate history tours that wind through downtown Georgetown streets. And stop at some of the city’s oldest or most significant residences and buildings.

The museum also serves as the hub for several locally produced events. Including the Winyah Bay Heritage Festival, which takes place every year in late February or early March. In addition, notable events conducted there include local book signings. Let alone holiday gift shop sales, and special guest lectures. For information on upcoming special events, festivals, and educational programs see the museum’s website.

Everyone is sure to discover a favorite small exhibit or gallery within the enormous local Historical Society’s collection, which includes artifacts from the area’s native inhabitants that stretch back thousands of years as well as more recent 20th-century collections that focus on the good ol’ days. Because of this, the Georgetown County Museum continues to wow its visitors in its appropriate location in the heart of the city. It is a worthwhile stop for anyone wandering around downtown and a must for history buffs who are new to the area.
