Description
Brookgreen Gardens has served as the neighborhood’s cultural hub ever since it was established in 1931 by Archer and Anna Hyatt Huntington. This National Historic Landmark is a wonderland of natural plants, animals, and American sculpture.
The Fighting Stallions sculpture by company founder Anna Hyatt Huntington serves as a convenient entrance marker. You can find the largest collection of outdoor figurative sculptures created by American artists in the world among the nine thousand lush acres of South Carolina history and Lowcountry scenery. Discover the Gullah culture of the enslaved Africans who lived and worked on the rice plantations in the 1800s at Brookgreen Gardens.
The Lowcountry Zoo and Native Animal Habitat offer visitors the chance to see animals in beautiful enclosures that respect both wildlife and the natural environment. Along with the fountains, reflecting pools, and secret passages, children will like the Peace Garden Room for Children and the Butterfly House.
On foot, by boat tour, or in the Trekker tour vehicle, visitors can experience everything Brookgreen Gardens has to offer. The Brookgreen Garden offers a wide range of holiday and cultural events in addition to its natural splendor.
